Bill Mason February 3, 2010
Bill Mason was a Canadian outdoorsman, painter, canoeist and environmentalist, who made many films on the art of canoeing and on the appreciation of nature. He developed and refined canoeing strokes and river-running techniques, especially for complex whitewater situations. He canoed all of his adult life, ranging widely over the wilderness areas of Canada and the United States.
If you have some time to kill, you can watch some of his films

Pine Lodge Ski Center revisted January 19, 2010
I first went to the Pine Lodge Ski Center in Kirkland Ohio around Christmas.A group from the Erie Outing Club was interested in going to Ohio to check it out.
So on Martin Luther King Holiday we decided to go to Ohio and try skiing their. The week before we had a warm up and the snow was melting. So I really didn’t know if the conditions would be very good or not.
Getting off the I-90 exit we could see green grass. But when we got their the trails were covered with snow. The snow was icy and very fast. All the trails were pack, and they had set tracks on the side of the trail. I seem to have good control even though the condition was icy.
I thought the place was very nice considering it was free. It was nice to go some place different to ski. The group and me all had a very enjoyable time. The scenic overlook was very interesting, but it was to foggy to see the City of Cleveland.

Chapin Forest Pine Lodge Ski Center – Kirtland, OH. January 1, 2010
Ray, Bob and I went to Chapin Forest Pine Lodge ski Center in Kirtland Ohio. Since we had the last week of the year off from work, I ask Ray and Bob if they wanted to check out this ski Center in Ohio.
We pulled in and they had a nice big parking Lot. They had a nice ski lodge. Their was a snack bar where they sold soup and candy, chips, etc. They rented skis for five dollars an hour, or fifteen dollars a day. You had to pay money to rent skis, but their was no trail fee. Their was a full size stuffed bear in the lodge. They also had a boots warmer for you ski boots.
The day was overcast with temperature in the low 30’s. The trails were very wide. Their was no track set, but it would have been good for skating. The trails were nice. Most of the hills were pretty easy, except for the connecting trail to the outer loop trail. The trail took us to the northern section of the park. One of the trails was as wide as a road. Then we notice that is was a road, but it was blocked off to traffic.
Their was about 6 miles of trails.Their was one hill that was an easy grade, but it must have been about quarter of a mile long. While on the trail we met a local skier on a Kick Sled. I never seen one before. But he told us that this was not something new, It been around about 100 years.
It was a nice place to go cross-country skiing. Pack trails, no trail fee, and a nice ski lodge. You couldn’t ask for anything more.
Lake Metroparks January 15, 2010
I would like to take this opportunity to talk about this area around Kirkland, Ohio
Kirkland is located in Lake County. They seem to have many parks in this County.
Thirty-one parks in this county to be exact. Granted their not real big parks, but their many of them close together. They call the parks Lake Metroparks.
In Kirkland there are 2 Metroparks, and an Arboretum all within a 5-mile radius, which have many miles of hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing Trails
You can go skiing at the Chapin Forest Reservation. They have about 6 miles of groomed trails. Their also the Penitentiary Glen Reservation. They have 7.5 miles of ungroomed trails. I heard this place is great for snow shoeing The Park is named for the deep gorge that divides it. Penitentiary Glen Reservation has a little zoo where they have mostly birds. These are bird that can’t be let back into the wild because of some health condition.
They’re also the Holden Arboretum. They have many miles of trails. All the trees are label what species the tree is. It a great learning experience to go there. There is a small entrance fee of $6.00 to go here. The other parks are free.
